Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery With Your Lifestyle in Mind

Bunion pain can make walking, exercising, wearing your favorite shoes, and enjoying everyday activities difficult. At Kansas Joint & Spine Specialists, Dr. Jon Morgan, offers Bunionplasty 360 Bunion Repair, a minimally invasive approach to bunion correction.

The Bunionplasty procedure uses tiny incisions and specialized technology to correct the underlying alignment of the big toe joint while preserving normal joint function. Designed to treat bunions of all sizes, the procedure may allow patients to walk the same day in a small surgical sandal, at their doctor’s discretion.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is more than just a bump on the side of your foot. It develops when the big toe joint rotates out of alignment. As the big toe begins to lean toward the other toes, a bump forms at its base.

Bunions can range from mild to severe, and even a small bunion can cause discomfort or mobility problems. Common symptoms may include:

  • A visible bump at the base of the big toe
  • Big toe leaning toward the other toes
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling or redness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Irritation, calluses, or blisters
  • Difficulty comfortably wearing certain shoes
  • Pain or limitations during everyday activities

Bunions tend to progress over time. While genetics can play a significant role, footwear that places additional pressure on the big toe joint and certain conditions that affect foot mechanics may contribute to worsening symptoms.

When Should You Consider Bunion Surgery?

Not every bunion requires surgery. Your doctor may first recommend nonsurgical options to help manage your symptoms.

Bunion surgery may be considered when nonsurgical treatments no longer provide adequate relief or your bunion significantly interferes with daily life. Surgery may also be recommended if the deformity continues to progress, walking becomes difficult, or the toes become severely misaligned.

Dr. Morgan can evaluate your foot, symptoms, and activity limitations to determine the treatment approach that is right for you.

What Is Bunionplasty 360 Bunion Repair?

Bunionplasty 360 Bunion Repair is a minimally invasive bunion surgery that uses specialized technology to correct the underlying bunion deformity.

Through tiny incisions, the bone is realigned and stabilized with a specialized implant to support healing. Unlike procedures that require fusion of a joint in the arch of the foot, Bunionplasty is designed to preserve normal joint function while promoting healing through natural bone regeneration.

Benefits of Bunionplasty

The procedure offers several potential advantages:

  • Minimally invasive approach: Uses tiny, strategically placed incisions.
  • Correction for bunions of all sizes: Can be used for mild, moderate, and severe bunions.
  • Preserves normal joint function: Corrects the bunion without requiring fusion of the arch joint.
  • Promotes bone regeneration: Allows the corrected bone to heal naturally.
  • Less complex hardware: Depending on the individual case, correction may be accomplished with a single specialized bone screw.
  • Potential same-day walking: Patients may be able to walk in a small surgical sandal the same day as surgery.
  • No Casts No Crutches®: Appropriate patients may recover without casts or crutches.
  • Bilateral treatment may be possible: In appropriate cases, both feet may be repaired during the same procedure.

Individual treatment and recovery recommendations vary and are determined by your doctor.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Every patient and recovery is different, but Bunionplasty describes the following typical recovery milestones:

Is Bunionplasty Right for You?

If bunion pain is making it difficult to walk, stay active, or comfortably wear the shoes you want, an evaluation with Dr. Morgan can help you understand your options.

Your evaluation may include a physical examination and X-rays to assess the alignment of your big toe and severity of your bunion. Dr. Morgan will also discuss your symptoms, how they affect your daily life, and which treatment options may be appropriate.

If surgery is recommended, Dr. Morgan can determine whether Bunionplasty may be an appropriate option for you.
