A New Option for Neck Pain

Artificial disc replacement is a procedure that can offer pain relief and restore function. During this surgery, a damaged or diseased cervical disc is replaced with an artificial disc that is designed to simulate the function of a natural cervical disc.

Candidates for cervical artificial disc replacement include patients who:

  • Are suffering from degenerative disc disease, which is the breaking down of a spinal disc
  • Have symptoms such as pain radiating down their arm or numbness
  • Are experiencing neck pain that is caused by one or two intervertebral discs
  • Have tried nonsurgical treatments

For some patients, artificial disc replacement can be an effective alternative to spinal fusion, which is the conventional treatment for cervical disc degeneration and herniation. However, while both procedures are designed to relieve pain, some studies show that disc replacement can better restore the flexibility of the neck.
